Application of different steroids in medicine

There are three classes of steroids: corticosteroids, estrogens and progestogens, and anabolic-androgenic steroids.
Essence of corticosteroids is similar to that of hormones produced in the adrenal cortex. Corticosteroids may be in form of creams, ointment, inhalation preparations, etc. They are taken in case of inflammations, allergy, illnesses of respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal and other systems.
Estrogens and progestogens represent female sex hormones. These hormones promote developing female secondary features. Birth control pills contain these compounds.
Anabolic-androgenic steroids represent medications which are also widely applied in medicine. They are able to cure certain types of breast cancer, testicular cancer, anemia, etc. These products are frequently prescribed to get better and faster recovery after several surgeries. Burn victims, persons with HIV/AIDS administer anabolic-androgenic steroids for prevention of muscle loss. Some steroids are also indicated for treatment of osteoporosis. These remedies are also indicated in case of infertility.
Furthermore, anabolic-androgenic steroids are taken for athletic purposes. These preparations can build muscles and promote enhancing strength. That’s why numerous athletes and bodybuilders use them for performance-enhancing effects. Some anabolic-androgenic steroids are capable also to burn fat, making muscles hard.
Administration of anabolic-androgenic steroids for non-medical purposes is forbidden under laws of several countries. Those who manufacture, sell, buy and administer these medications illegally may be sentenced to imprisonment and/or fines. These medicines belong to illicit substances in certain countries because they may cause different side effects. While certain adverse effects are insignificant and disappear after discontinuation of usage, others are dangerous and even irreversible. Those who want to obtain benefits, administering steroids for medical purposes, should use these preparations under indications of physicians.
